Fairs n Fests Around the Region Continue Through the Weekend

It's going to be one busy weekend in the Mountain State. With so much going on here, there and everywhere, there'll be lots of choices for folks in deciding where to spend their next few summer days.

From Snowshoe's Freedom Fest, to the HOG Rally at Canaan Valley, Durbin and Beverly Heritage Days, the Belington Homecoming, the Battle of Laurel Hill re-enactment and the Upshur County Fair, the possibilities seem endless. So grab some sunblock, a comfortable pair of shoes and shade, and head out for some summer adventures.

Thousands of Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts from West Virginia and across the nation began arriving in Tucker County Wednesday for five days of fun, fellowship and fantastic scenery. The bikers are all part of the 2008 West Virginia State Harley Owners Group Rally at Canaan Valley Resort.

This is the third year the group has had their event at the resort, and once again many in the entire Tucker County area are expected to benefit from the group's visit.

The group is celebrating its 25th anniversary and many activities have been planned for the weekend, including multiple group rides designed to showcase the beauty of the area. Today's "Raw Hide" Ride will take participants for a 300-mile round trip from Canaan Valley to Seneca Rocks, the Green Bank Observatory, Marlinton, Beverly, Elkins, Philippi and back to Canaan. On Friday, the group will travel from Canaan Valley Resort to Camp Kidd near Parsons, where the Tucker County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tucker County Rotary will host a dinner and activities.

On Saturday, the group will join in some fun field events at Canaan Valley Resort in the morning and a bike show at Timberline Resort in the afternoon. Daily activities, games and entertainment round out the event.

To register for the rally, which is only open to Harley Owner Group members and guests, call 982-6777 or visit www.wvstatehogrally.com. For additional information concerning Canaan Valley Resort, call 1-800-622-4121 or visit www.canaanresort.com.

Just across the way, Timberline Four Seasons Resort will be joining in on all the motorcycle fervor when it hosts the Ride In Bike Show on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The resort will also sponsor a free, all-day and evening country music legends concert beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the deck of the ski lodge.

The bike show and festivities at Timberline will continue throughout the day and evening, and the motorcycles will be judged in various categories. Registration for the Ride In Bike Show will be open today through Saturday. The day's festivities on Saturday will start with the judging of the bikes by people's choice.

Saturday will also feature an appearance by Roy Scott, legendary star of West Virginia's world famous WWVA Jamboree, as well as Harmony Scott and James Michel Woodyard. There is no admission fee and Woodyard will perform throughout the day and at the late Saturday night dance party.

Timberline plans to offer outdoor dining throughout the entire week with breakfasts, lunches and dinners served on the deck overlooking the slopes.

For more information on Timberline's events, call 866-4801, 1-866-438-7259 or visit www.timberlineresort.com.

And while Canaan and Timberline are surrounded by hundreds upon hundreds of bikers, still more will be heading to West Virginia's All Brand Motorcycle Touring Rally at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. Now in its ninth year, this year's Freedom Fest - today through Sunday - will feature four fun-filled days of tours, live entertainment from classic rockers The Outlaws and Pure Prairie League, biker games and the newest addition, a $10,000 poker run.

Riders will cruise across Pocahontas County, stopping at designated locations, trying to build the best hand. The lucky biker with the winning set will walk away with $10,000.

Nightly entertainment today through Sunday will include several bands at both the outdoor Village Stage as well as The Connection nightclub. As part of Snowshoe Mountain's Summer Music Series, the Skidder Slope Stage will be rocking Saturday as The Outlaws and Pure Prairie League take over this great outdoor venue.

A complete schedule of Freedom Fest events is available at www.snowshoefreedomfest.com. Guests can make reservations for Freedom Fest by calling 1-877-441-4FUN.

The Buckhannon Community Theatre will present "Damn Yankees," the musical version of America's favorite pastime, today through Sunday. The ball field will be re-created in Atkinson Auditorium on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon. Evening performances are at 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. No reservations can be accepted. Handicapped seating is available and stadium refreshments will be available for purchase before the show and during intermission.

The 13th annual Battle of Laurel Hill Re-enactment, sponsored by the Belington Convention and Visitors Bureau, Freedom Bank and the 11th Virginia Cavalry, will officially open on Friday evening with ceremonies at the battleground pavilion on Laurel Mountain Road. The Homecoming Weekend is jointly represented by Belington BRC and the Belington Volunteer Fire Department.

The event features a Lads and Lassies Pageant, car show, flea market, a silent auction, games for children, a water slide, duck race, musical entertainment, a magic show, parade and the annual train robbery. A chili cookoff and a chicken barbecue are planned with other food venues available during the weekend.

For more re-enactment information, call Lynne Snyder at 823-3327, e-mail information@battleoflaurelhill.org or visit www.battleoflaurelhill.org. Re-enactors are asked to call Kathy Hart at 823-2557 to register. For homecoming information, call Terri Kittle at 823-1792.

The 21st annual Durbin Days Heritage Festival begins today and continues through Saturday. This year's event will commemorate Durbin's heritage with lots of exhibits, demonstrations, games, crafts, food, music, parades and more.
