Augusta Begins Fifth, Final Week.
The fifth and final week of Augusta of workshops, concerts, lectures and dances focuses on three different themes: old-time, vocal and dance. Tuesday's concert includes elements of each with performances by master old-time musicians/teachers Joe Newberry, who plays with Big Medicine and Red Clay Ramblers; Mike Bryant, the 2007 first-place fiddler at Clifftop; and Steve Kilby, North Carolina State Champion on guitar; and guest master artist Paul David Smith.
The second half of the concert will include singer, award-winning songwriter and teacher Kate Long accompanied by Robin Kessinger. Notorious musicians Eden MacAdam-Somer and Larry Unger, bring together traditional and contemporary acoustic music from around the world. Notorious will also accompany dancer and instructor Matthew Duveneck and partner in their performance of the tango.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Harper-McNeeley Auditorium on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors age 60 and older and youths age 16 and younger. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The audience will have the opportunity to bid on items in the silent auction and to buy raffle tickets for the commemorative "Margo" banjo before the concert and during intermission. Silent auction bidding will end when the lights blink at the end of intermission during Thursday night's concert.
Following the concert, a dance of contras and squares will begin in the dance pavilion with music by The Avant Gardeners. The price of admission is $5 per person. Those who attend the concert may dance for free.
This week will culminate with the annual Augusta Festival which begins Friday evening with a festival dance, includes the Augusta Festival in Elkins City Park and festival concert and dance on Saturday. Events end with a participatory gospel sing on Sunday morning.
