Nick Kiddey told The Southland Times this week that he urinates on his vegetable plants as it was an excellent fertiliser, which was sterile and contains no pathogens.
It was also a great way to conserve water instead of flushing the toilet which wastes up to 11 litres of clean water per flush, Mr Kiddey said.
However, a caller to The Southland Times disagreed with Mr Kiddey's comments about urine containing no pathogens and wanted to know what evidence there was to support it.
Mr Kiddey responded, stating that on further research into the issue he agreed urine "may contain" pathogens.
"It is sterile while in the bladder, but may pick up bacteria as it leaves the body. If a person is suffering from a urinary tract infection or other illness, there is a possibility of it being transferred."
Mr Kiddey said he had been urinating on his plants for as long as he had been gardening (about a decade).
"And (I) have never suffered any ill health as a result, which is not to say that it will be the same for everyone." _________________ Don't believe everything you think.

I wonder if it keeps the deer from eating it?
You can spray your garden for deer. Did you know that?
With lead!

I know a woman who uses hair and urine to spread around the perimeter of her garden to keep deer away. She saves all hair clippings and collects her families urine sporadically. Personally, I say just use fishing line or those flash strip thingys. The hair clippings, not so bad, the urine collection...I find that weird.
I like the lead idea, too! One can never have too much venison in the freezer.

Well Pee around your garden will not do a thing to sway the deer from your garden. They can not tell the difference from human urine. I have actually made fake scrapes by using my own urine. Works rather well. _________________ You remind me of a visa card, you are everywhere I want to be.

Sounds fascinating. Ewwwwwww. LOL
Remember the movie 'Doc Hollywood' starring Michael J. Fox? He and the love interest in the film went running around the woods peeing everywhere to mark the area so deer wouldn't come around during deer season. It may not work, but it sure was funny!
